On border security
Republican Rudy Giuliani has said the federal government needs to ensure U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico are secure to prevent future terrorist attacks. The former New York mayor cites a bomb scare in London in 2007 as an example.

On immigration overhaul
Giuliani opposed the 2007 comprehensive bill that would have provided a path to citizenship for most illegal immigrants in the USA, created a “guest-worker” program, changed visa rules to emphasize a worker’s skills and beefed up border security. He called it “a typical Washington mess” and said it was a “mish-mash” written for lawyers.

Giuliani advocates a federal database of immigrants and a way to identify people who are eligible to work in the USA. The best way “to sensibly create security is to have a tamper-proof card, a database, and then kind of back up from that,” he said during the GOP presidential debate May 3 at the Ronald Reagan presidential library.
