Liberals Trying To Save Chicago By Raising Taxes

It’s going to be fun to watch the liberal “utopia” of Chicago continue to collapse into ruins with their continuation of failed policies:

It’s a tough time to be a Chicago taxpayer.

Even as the Board of Education plans a property tax increase, Cook County commissioners weigh a sales tax increase and a public transit bailout could mean another foray into local wallets, the Daley administration is considering increasing taxes on everything from SUVs to beer — and raising property taxes as well.

The lengthy menu of possibilities comes as city budget officials seek to close a $217 million budget shortfall for 2008.
“Everything you possibly can imagine” is on the table, one senior administration official said Monday. “It’s a tough year. No doubt about that.”

Options include increasing the city’s tax on a six-pack of beer by 4 cents and on wine by 2 cents a bottle; raising the city tax on gasoline by up to 10 cents a gallon; creating a 10-cent-a-bottle tax on bottled water; increasing the cost of vehicle stickers for sport-utility vehicles; quadrupling parking-meter rates in neighborhoods to $1 an hour; raising the sales tax on restaurant bills; making penalties heavier for parking-ticket scofflaws; and raising the 911 phone surcharge, according to City Hall sources.

Last one out, please turn out the lights.

Maybe try spending less? You know, like NORMAL people who are in debt do?

[...] Remember, it’s not just about the price but the cost of living. Real Estate property taxes may not be reflected in the price of a home but it’s certainly going to be a big part of your yearly expenses no matter what your mortgage is. Property Taxes are not something you can pay off and never worry about again because they come back each and every year.  And if anybody could ever show me where a local government that relies on property taxes has a surplus and reimburses their property tax rates for a regular home owner, please forward it to me. The real estate boom was also a boom for local governments in the form of higher revenues from transfer taxes, new homes and permit fees. As next year’s budgets are made, these governments will have a choice between raising taxes to make up for the short fall, or cut services. If you live in a city such as Chicago, the choice has been made to raise Taxes on what seems to be everything including taxing bottled water and raising transfer tax r…. [...]
