NEW YORK — A federal judge sentenced a Bronx activist to 17 years in prison Friday for bilking more than 2,000 fellow immigrants in a green card scam calling it “one of the greatest cons I’ve ever seen.” U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan lambasted Maria Maximo’s scheme as “a truly horrible crime” and ordered her to forfeit $2 million that she had amassed between 2004 and 2006 by filing work visa applications she knew would be denied. Maximo, 54, preyed on the dreams of illegal immigrants, ripping off 500 of them by charging $500 a piece to prepare work permit applications that, by law, were invalid, prosecutors said.
