Duncan Hunter on immigration

On border security
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., was the main sponsor of the bill Congress passed in 2006 that called for nearly 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border. He cited results from a fence built in San Diego County, which he represents. “Every criminal activity in every statistical category has been eliminated or decreased,” Hunter said. President Bush signed the bill, which contained no funding to actually build the fence.

On immigration overhaul
Hunter opposed the 2007 comprehensive immigration reform bill that would have established a “guest-worker” program, provided a path to citizenship for most of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA, beefed up border security and other provisions. Hunter said the bill would have rewarded “those who have broken our laws,” and compared it to giving amnesty.

In December 2005, Hunter voted for an immigration bill that would have stressed border security, forced employers to verify the legal status of their workers, and deemed illegal immigrants and their families in the USA as criminals.
