Prince William Leaders Respond to Immigration Rights Rally

Government officials in the northern Virginia county where thousands of pro-immigrant rights advocates rallied Sunday responded by criticizing Congress and the president for not doing enough to help the issue.
Prince William County officials also called the group that organized the rally “lawless” and “anti-American.”
The immigrant rights group Mexicans Without Borders organized a rally and march at the county government center that was the culmination of a weeklong boycott of Prince William County businesses that were not immigrant-owned or pro-immigrant.
The events were designed to protest a July 10 Board of Supervisors resolution that seeks to deny many public services to undocumented immigrants.
At a press conference Monday, Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart said the task of enforcement is left to the county.
“Congress has failed,” he said. “The president has failed to attack this problem and as a result, communities such as ours are paying the price in terms of crowded classrooms, crowded jails and hospitals.”
“Because the federal government has failed, Prince William County is stepping up to the plate,” Stewart added.
