Mukasey Nomination About “Confirmability”
J.J. Jackson* | September 22, 2007
Continuing to show a fear of confrontation and putting the left on the spot, President Bush has decided that he just doesn’t want a fight with his new choice for Attorney General:
President Bush plans to choose Michael B. Mukasey, a former federal judge who was nominated to the bench by Ronald Reagan, to replace Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Republicans close to the process told The Politico.”It came down to confirmability,” said a former Justice Department official involved in the conversations.Conservatives had been rooting for former Solicitor General Theodore B. (Ted) Olson, but Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) vowed Wednesday to block his confirmation.
“The White House seems like they don’t want a confirmation fight,” said a Republican close to the selection process. “They think this guy is bulletproof from the left.”
It would have been hysterical to watch the liberals melt down in attacking a man who lost his wife in the September 11th attacks. But instead it looks like President Bush has taken the easy road.
Despite some liberals like Reid saying in advance of Mukasey’s nomination that they would support him, count on them retreating from that stance now that he is the nominee.
I’m not saying Mukasey won’t be a good choice. I’m simply saying that there are better choices out there for people with the stones to fight the left.
