MoveOn.org Folds Under Criticism of Favoritism

After pitching to get a discount on their ad in the New York Times attacking General Petraeus, MoveOn.org is saying that they are going to pay the balance between their discounted rate and the rate card:

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) — The activist group MoveOn.org said it will pay the New York Times $77,083 to make up the difference between what it paid for an advertisement attacking U.S. Army General David Petraeus and the regular ad rate. The group acted after the newspaper’s public editor wrote in a column today that the controversial full-page advertisement on Sept. 10 violated standards on content and the price given to MoveOn.org wasn’t proper under Times policies.

Uh, so the question is, if you were going to pay it then why not just pay it in the first place? The answer? Because they have given people yet another reason to question them and the New York Times and they want to remove that ability to criticize their relation to and the liberalness of the paper.

If they pay the balance they think that when the issue is brought up as a fact, they can just claim that it isn’t true and that they paid full rate … even though they didn’t.

Don’t be fooled however, there is another reason. The Times and MoveOn are in hot legal waters over this because they violated federal law. Of course the federal government has no legitimate role in regulating these sorts of things (or at least shouldn’t). But what we have here is a bunch of liberals getting tangled in their own big government bureaucracy.

Of course now they are trying to turn the tables and demand that Rudy Giuliani, who was given the same rate as MoveOn.org to refute their idiocy should also pay the full rate. So, MoveOn.org and the Times violate the law, and Rudy should be the subject of an investigation and required to pay a penalty for their own stupidity? Somehow that doesn’t seem to wash, but it is a typical liberal ploy. Which is odd, considering how liberal Rudy is.
