Illegal immigrants nabbed in raid ask to delay deportation

Associated Press – September 1, 2007 12:05 PMETCINCINNATI (AP) – The illegal immigrants arrested in this week’s raid have asked a judge to block federal authorities from deporting them before they can meet with lawyers. Firooz Namei, an attorney for the immigrants, says the group wants to stay in Ohio, close to their families and lawyers until they know more about their status. Namei filed a petition yesterday in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati seeking an order for a delay. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the raid at Koch Foods plant in Fairfield, southwest Ohio netted 161 illegal aliens. About 80 remain locked up in southern Ohio jails.
