Immigration Debate at WSU Takes Controversial Turn

Carolyn Hileman | August 29, 2007

As campus-wide events welcomed students at Wichita State University back for the fall semester, this one may have given some the opposite impression. “I was a little upset and disgusted,” says Hector Castania of HALO, the student Hispanic organization. As part of the Welcomefest events to kick off the fall semester, the College Republicans invited students to compete in an illegal immigration obstacle course. Participants strapped on fake suicide bombs, jumped over a fence, strapped on a backpack and ran toward a blow-up doll of Governor Kathleen Sebelius, giving her a high-five at the finish.
