Thompson Takes GOP Lead In Rasmussen Poll
J.J. Jackson* | June 20, 2007
Just because we’ve got some Paul cranks out there that might take this as my reporting on this as an endorsement of Thompson, I want to reiterate that I am supporting no candidate currently in the race at this time. But a new poll by Rasmussen shows that Fred Thompson continues to surge:
There’s change at the top in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson earning support from 28% of Likely Republican Primary Voters. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani attracts support from 27%. While Thompson’s one-point edge is statistically insignificant, it is the first time all year that anybody but Giuliani has been on top in Rasmussen Reports polling. A week ago, Thompson and Giuliani were tied at 24%.
I don’t want to say that Fred Thompson is the common man’s man, but I think his popularity thus far comes from that perception. His video response to Michael Moore where he taunted the gravitationally challenged filmmaker with facts about how Castro treats dissidents and blew off his petty requests I think helped to launch that image. The man certainly has a certain charm about him and it will be seen if that can be translated into a lasting popularity. Conservatives are apt to be initially taken by such an “every man” persona but eventually they require substance to win their votes in the long run.
