Smoking Gestapo Regrouping

Last week in my weekly column I talked about how bureaucrats unkind to liberty were assaulting liberty through regulation by proposing smoking bans that affect the private property rights of restaurant and bar owners. Well we’ve got some more folks to add to that watch list:

RICHMOND, Va. — Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said Tuesday that he will not give up his quest to ban smoking in Virginia restaurants.

“I think momentum on this is very strong,” Kaine said on his monthly call-in radio show on WTOP in Washington, D.C.

The General Assembly passed a bill last winter that would have required restaurants that allow smoking to post a “Smoking Permitted” sign at the entrance. However, those restaurants no longer would have been required to offer a nonsmoking section.

Kaine amended the bill to simply ban smoking in restaurants statewide. The House of Delegates voted 59-40 to reject the amendment, and Kaine vetoed the bill.

New Hampshire residents gave up their liberties by passing just such a ban and the liberals here in Pennsylvania are trying to do the same. Now we have Comrade Kaine in Virginia.

Again, don’t like resturants that allow smoking? Think it is hazardous to your health? DO NOT go there. DO NOT work there! It’s called “liberty”. You might want to try it some time!

    Again, don’t like resturants that allow smoking? Think it is hazardous to your health? DO NOT go there. DO NOT work there! It’s called “liberty”. You might want to try it some time!
