BREAKING NEWS: Army Misses Recruiting Goal!

But the REALLY important news is that this is first time in 2 years that they have missed a monthly goal despite claims by certain groups that the military is suffering because of a lack of people that want to serve their country for reasons such as the War in Iraq. But that didn’t stop the LA Times from making that claim … again.

WASHINGTON — The Army missed its May recruiting goal by nearly 400 soldiers, or just over 7%, marking the first time in almost two years the service has fallen short and renewing questions about whether the war in Iraq is having a long-term effect on the well-being of the Army.

The fact that the LA Times would even say that this is “renewing questions about whether the war in Iraq is having a long-term effect on the well-being of the Army” after just noting that it was the first time in two years that such a goal has been missed I think shows an underlying desire for it to be true. Facts be damned.

May is traditionally one of most difficult recruiting months, as the school year comes to an end, Army officials said. They noted that even with the lower numbers, the Army is about 2,000 recruits ahead of its year-to-date goal. The Army aims to recruit 80,000 soldiers this year.

So basically what the LA Times is saying is that this story is a non-story. So why run it?

Answer: Political expedience.
