A Phelps County Sheriff’s Department deputy stopped a man for speeding on Interstate 44 on Monday, and later discovered the car had more than 16 pounds of cocaine. The man, Jose Romero Reyes-Ugarte, 25, who said he was from Waukesha, Wis., was eastbound at about the 185 mile-marker when stopped. According to Sheriff’s Department Detective and Information Officer Andy Davis, something about Reyes-Ugarte led the officer to become suspicious. The deputy’s intuition was correct, as a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a $1 bill and a powdery substance in a pouch stuffed above the sun visor.
