Green Bay’s city council is set to decide whether the city will exercise its licensing authority to fight illegal immigration. City Council President Chad Fradette wants every business applying for or transferring its city liquor license to agree not to hire illegal immigrants. Fradette first brought up the idea at last week’s Protection and Welfare Committee meeting. Three businesses currently applying to renew their liquor licenses would get them only after promising to not knowingly hire illegal workers. Multicultural activists say they think it’s unfair because undocumented workers aren’t causing problems in the community. But Fradette hopes this is the beginning of a large-scale, city-wide fight against illegal immigration.
