Libby Guilty Of Obstructing Something Or Other; Jurors Call Him Fall Guy But For What?

J.J. Jackson* | March 6, 2007

Patrick Fitzgerald got his man today in one Scooter Libby as the jury returned a guilty verdict on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. The Jurors however seemed about as confused as anyone else in this case:

NEW YORK A spokesman for the jury that convicted “Scooter” Lewis of four counts today of perjury and obstruction of justice today in a federal courtroom told reporters immediately afterward that many felt sympathy for Libby and believed he was only the “fall guy.”

Denis Collins said that “a number of times” they asked themselves, “what is HE doing here? Where is Rove and all these other guys….He was the fall guy.”

He said they believed that Vice President Cheney did “task him to talk to reporters.”

He said, “some jurors said at one point, ‘We wish we weren’t judging Libby…this sucks.” More than once he said many jurors found Libby “sympathetic.” http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003554231

These are good questions that the jury should have taken into account before sentencing a man for non-lying about a non-crime that wasn’t even committed by him but rather Richard Armitage. Perhaps if they would have actually asked themselves this question the obvious answer to anyone with half a brain would have been that there was no evidence that any of these people that they think should be there like Rove and Cheney had done anything wrong.

One can only wonder how Libby is guilty of “obstruction of justice” when Fitzgerald knew before he even talked to Libby that it was Armitage who disclosed the name of Valerie Plame (who was not covert by the way nor was her identity protected by any law).

And Fitzgerald’s response to the verdict? Well … no further charges. Huh? So if Libby is guilty of obstructing justice doesn’t that imply that he stopped an investigation (or severely hampered it at least) from going forward? So if there are no new charges forthcoming what did Libby obstruct exactly?

Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald says the CIA leak investigation was now inactive.

“I do not expect to file any additional charges,” he said.

Again I ask if no new charges are forth coming what exactly did Libby “obstruct”?

So after all these years what do we have? We have a man found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice but no actual charges about the non-crime of leaking a non-covert agent’s name. Can I get me one of these sweet government jobs? I’d love to work for years on the tax payer’s dime and accomplish nothing but ruining careers.
