200 protest in S.F. against immigration raids

SAN FRANCISCO — About 200 people marched from the Mission District to the federal building in San Francisco today to protest recent immigration raids.The crowd gathered about 11 a.m. at 16th and Mission and, accompanied by about two dozen police officers, headed about a mile north to the federal building.

Marchers carried signs in English and Spanish. Among the slogans: “Immigration raids terrorize our country” and “The INS is terrorizing my family.”

A recent crackdown by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has resulted in the arrests of 13,000 people nationwide in the past nine months, including several hundred in the Bay Area, for immigration violations.
