Rudy Giuliani Back To Talking Out Both Sides Of His Mouth

For Conservatives who thought that for one second Rudy Giuliani might just be their guy in 2008 after his tough talk about combating Islamic Terrorists, those hopes have been all but shattered.

SACRAMENTO — Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

“I used gun control as mayor,” he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But “I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms.”

Ok, so Rudy says he understands the Second Amendment which says that the right of the people to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed” but he established gun control anyway. So basically, Rudy “understands” it … he just doesn’t believe in it.

I guess it all depends on what your definition of “shall not” is right Bill? – Uh, I mean Rudy.

This is a serious problem for Giuliani. He’s going to run on his response to 9/11 and his reduction of crime in NYC. However, HOW he went about reducing crime in NYC is problematic. He filed a suit against two-dozen gun manufactures in 2000. He’s not hesitant about using gun control, and he can say it works (CompStat). His history regarding immigration is also problematic; he prevented city employees from contacting INS about immigration violations, and defended the policy in federal court, and of course, he favors a guest worker program.

Given that Giuliani and McCain aren’t exactly the most conservative of candidates, who looks good to the folks who read/make this page right now? Romney? Are folks holding out for Gingrich to announce?

As usual conservatives are going to be stuck with a choice of the least of all evils each election.
