Illegal-immigration reform will be difficult, Bishop says

Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, told state lawmakers Friday that the new, Democrat-controlled Congress may do little or nothing to deal with illegal immigration. “That’s going to be very difficult,” Bishop told members of the Utah Senate in response to a question from Sen. Howard Stepehenson, R-Draper. A similar question was raised in the Utah House when Bishop spoke there. Bishop said in the Senate that Congress must find a way to make it easier to immigrate to the United States legally but, at the same time, harder to get here illegally. That’s not easy, he said. “We got into this situation by 40 years of bumbling around,” Bishop said, adding that it can’t be changed overnight. The effect of any changes on immigrants already in the United States illegally must also be considered, he said.
