Don’t think about smoking in your car in Bangor Maine if children are present. You’ll get the nanny state mad.
BANGOR, Maine (AP) — The Bangor City Council approved a measure Monday that prohibits people from smoking in vehicles when children are present.
When the law goes into effect next week, Bangor will become the first municipality in Maine to have such a law. Similar statewide measures have been adopted in Arkansas and Louisiana and are under consideration in several other states.People who smoke with children present in the confined space of a car or truck might as well be deliberately trying to kill those children, said City Councilor Patricia Blanchette, who is a smoker.
“Let’s step up to the plate and lead; our children are worth the fight,” she said. The ordinance, which was approved by a 6-3 vote, applies to any motor vehicles on any public roads within the city. Violators face fines of up to $50.
Incrimental demolition of basic liberty and rights will always be masked in the guise of “the common good” or “for the children”. The reality however is that what is really at stake is the power of government bureaucrats and elected politicians who don’t have enough real problems to deal with apparently.
The facts are the facts. Smoking does not “cause cancer”. If it did everyone that smoked would have cancer and they obviously do not. It might be a contributing factor but by that same token anything that can possibly contribute to any disease or cause of death should also be outlawed. Water would have to be outlawed because ingesting too much of it causes drowning. Greasy hamburgers would have to be outlawed because eating too many makes you fat and might give you a heart attack. Heck, for that matter being “fat” at all would have to be outlawed. Looks like it is time to start arresting fat people!
Think that those examples are too over the top? You’ve not been paying attention to our elected officials of late then.
To tell someone that the can no longer smoke in their own car because bureaucrats decide that another passenger arbitrarily needs their protection is so far out of line with basic and just principles of government that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. But apparently it does take someone smarter than your average politician in Bangor.
With all the taxes smokers pay and that politicians love to collect so they can spend one has to wonder why they would work so hard to keep them from smoking.
