“Tax Revolt” Could Be Coming Sooner Than You Think

Despite all the crying and moaning about how confiscatory income taxes and the collection of personal data outside of the Constitutionally mandated census few people do little more than go to jail when they evade paying their taxes. Well, apparently Ed Brown and some others are ready to take on the Feds when they come knocking.

CONCORD, N.H. –Elaine Brown, convicted of 17 felony counts of tax evasion, stood silently as a judge scheduled her sentencing hearing. Her husband, also found guilty, barricaded himself in the fortress-like home that the couple could lose as punishment. A jury decided Thursday that the Browns engaged in a scheme to hide Elaine Brown’s income of $1.9 million between 1996 and 2003. Jurors also found that over 10 years, the couple also used $215,890 of postal money orders — broken into increments just below the reporting threshold — to pay for their hilltop compound and for Elaine Brown’s dental practice.

Ed Brown and about 25 armed supporters are holed up in the cement-walled home, waiting for U.S. marshals to storm the 110-acre Plainfield property. The marshals say they have no plans to raid the site.

I have mixed feelings about this situation. I do believe in abiding by the law and that no matter how much I dislike the government thinking it has a right to progressively more and more of my money just by virtue of the fact that I work hard.

On the other hand I know that there is a high probability that we will never reform a tax code basically designed to make criminals out of American citizens until either 1) shots are actually fired or 2) the politicians are so deathly scared of shots being fired at them that they relent and reform.

The other problem is that with us quickly approaching a point where the majority of Americans will not pay federal taxes (or so think not understanding how much hidden tax is in everything they buy), that many Americans just do not give a damn.

The government does not have a right to the fruits of our labors as citizens before we do. Any government that thinks that way is so far divested from the basic principles of good governance that no good can come from it. If this current situation comes to blows it could just be the first in a long line of battles where the citizens begin to stand up against the federal government.
