By Crystal Yednak. As he signed into law a $1 increase in the minimum wage Monday, Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he will push to add automatic cost-of-living increases when the legislature reconvenes in January.
Hey, someone should tell the state of Illinois that they don’t have the ability to interfere with the rights of citizens to legally contract with each other for goods and services for the price they deem fit.
What? You’ve never been told this? Well, class is now in session!
“Article I. Section. 10.
Clause 1: No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.”
Ok boys and girls, what does that mean? It means that if I want to pay Bob $5.00/hr and Bob wants to work for $5.00/hr the State (in this case Illinois) cannot interfere with that contract or set the terms of that contract to anything other than what Bob and I have agreed to.
So all that is left to ask those of you that think the minimum wage is a good is do you believe in the Constitution? Do you believe in the right to contract? Do you believe in liberty? Or do you believe in Socialism?
If you believe in Socialism, just admit it. It will make things much easier in the long run if you stop deluding yourselves into thinking that you actually believe in what it means to be an American.
