Gingrich Not Proposing Anything New

Liberals are going crazy over Newt Gingrich claiming that he is calling for restrictions on free speech. But what he is proposing is actually nothing new and is generally accepted restrictions on where crimes begin:

MANCHESTER – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich last night defended his call to limit freedom of speech to combat terrorism, comments that last month provoked strident criticism from liberal groups.

Gingrich said the threat of biological or nuclear attack requires America to consider curbs to speech to fight terrorists, if it is to protect the society that makes the First Amendment possible.

“Our friends at the ‘ACLU left,’ of course, were staggered at this concept,” Gingrich told an audience of Republicans at a Christmas banquet. “How could we talk about anything less than 100 percent free speech? How could we consider in any way thinking about this issue?”

Gingrich cited last month’s ejection of six Muslim scholars from a plane in Minneapolis for suspicious behavior, which included reports they prayed before the flight and had sat in the same seats as the Sept. 11 hijackers.

“Those six people should have been arrested and prosecuted for pretending to be terrorists,” Gingrich said. “And the crew of the U.S. airplane should have been invited to the White House and congratulated for being correct in the protection of citizens.”

So what is he saying? He is not saying that you do not have the right to say what you want but rather that when you speak and say something you have to be held responsible for it. For example, if your neighbor (we’ll call him “Bob”) threatens to kill you he would be arrested. He is not arrested because he said he wants to kill you - he is arrested because he wants to kill you. And that would be a violation of your rights. The “speech” is merely evidence of what his intended actions are.

Now, if you don’t agree with that, then we will all be more than happy to let “Bob” sneak into your house and strangle you before we do anything if you like.

Newt’s problem is that sometimes what he says is put in very blunt ways. He is not a flowery, wishy-washy politician giving everyone the typical doube-speak we expect from our elected officials. He’s also someone every liberal fears. So you can count on a lot of spin of what he says especially if he decideds to run for president.
