Citizenship For Sale Follow-Up
Carolyn Hileman* | December 2, 2006
Our NBC 6 investigation “Citizenship For Sale” uncovered how immigrants from around the country are flocking here to buy membership in an Indian tribe. It’s a way, they’re told, to live and work in the United States. But it didn’t work out that way for one South Florida man. It looks like a typical family outing for Hugo Ramirez. But his home for the last 15 years is not a small town outside Mexico City. His home is South Florida, where’s he’s lived illegally. It all changed in September when Ramirez tried to use his membership in the Pembina Indian Nation Little Shell Band as a way to return home to Miami from Mexico. He was stopped at the airport and thrown in Krome Detention Center where he was held for a month before being deported.
