Thousands watch parachutist die at Bridge Day festival
FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - Late deployment of his parachute may have caused the death of an experienced BASE jumper during the annual Bridge Day festival.
Fayette County Sheriff Bill Laird says it appears that Brian Lee Schubert died as a result of a partial or late deployment of his parachute. As a matter of the investigation, the equipment was secured and will be examined in the coming days.
The 66-year-old Schubert died Saturday of injuries suffered when he hit the water 876 feet below the New River Gorge Bridge.
Witnesses said the parachute didn’t open until about 25 feet above the river.
I can understand the “thrill” one might get from putting their own life senselessly on the line. But the lesson is still when man confronts nature – nature wins eventually.
