Omeed Popal Mentally Ill Islamist Jihadist?

Ok, I’ve been trying to get my hands around the incident earlier this week in San Fancisco where Omeed Aziz Popal decided to take his Honda Pilot for a joy ride through a traditionally Jewish neighborhood and start running people down. I have held off commenting because news of the event has been sketchy at best. Today I am amazed that we still know very little about what happened.

We know Omeed recently went to Afghanistan supposedly for a prearranged marriage. We know that he is Muslim according to some reports although I have not seen any real hard confirmation. I still don’t know if he is a follower of Islam although it appears that his father did not think too highly of American Society despite coming to this country:

Omeed Popal was 29 years old, but apparently totally sheltered and controlled by his parents, who, according to the [San Jose Mercury News], “believed they needed to protect him from America’s ‘evil society.’” - Yahoo

We know he picked an area of town that did have a nice sized Jewish population. And we know that a witness to the end of the incident claimed that Omeed proclaimed himself a terrorist but refused to be put on camera.

And that’s it. And what’s more is it is bizarre that this is all we know considering how quick the media is to jump all over most stories and scramble for information even if it isn’t accurate (i.e. the Duke rape case).

The fact of the matter is that if Omeed does turn out to be an Islamic terrorist would it be a shock if he really was “mentally ill”?
