Gentlemen - Start You Polls!
J.J. Jackson* | August 21, 2006
I hate polls. Generally the questions don’t ask what they appear to ask (i.e. so they can be spun later) and rarely are proper follow-ups given such as asking someone why they think a certain way that lead to their answer. But since polls are life in politics I thought I would point to the latest from Strategic Vision concerning politics in my home state of Pennsylvania.
Swann is narrowing the gap on “Fast Eddie, Hey I’ll Give You Property Tax Relief! No REALLY I WILL!” Rendell. Rendell still leads but the margin is now only 10 points (51% to 41%). This is impressive to me considering the vast majority of Pennsylvanians said “Pennsylvania is headed in the wrong direction” (60% wrong and 26% right). I guess most Pennsylvanians do not realize that Fast Eddie has veto power over all the legislation that is burying us in the basement of the economic growth in the United States. I think saying that PA voters are schizophrenic would be an understatement!
Most of the questions show that Pennsylvanians are very left wing and don’t like President Bush (heck a lot of us conservatives have issues with Bush!). But here is an interesting one that the anti-war left (aka John Murtha) should take note of. When asked “8. Would you like to see the United States withdraw all troops immediately from Iraq within the next six months?” only 37% said yes while 47% said no.
Remarkably this is similar to how badly the liberal but pro-war Joe Lieberman is beating the uber liberal but anti-war Lamont in Connecticut. Still want to run on that anti war platform? Might want to rethink that!
And I really wish that after they ask this question: “Do you approve or disapprove of President Bush’s handling of the economy?” they would follow up. The question should be put to each specimen that said they “disapproved”: “Have you ever actually read the Constitution and know that President Bush is not given authority to ‘handle the economy or are you just a flaming Marxist?” Each of the people that say no to the first and yes to the second should be given 50 lashes with a wet noodle and held up for public ridicule. And those that claim they have read it but STILL answered with ?disapproval? should be given 500 lashes and sent to colonize the sun for lying.
