Citizens Against Govenrment Waste - Porker of the Month
J.J. Jackson* | August 28, 2006
“itizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Rep. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.) Porker of the Month for burnishing his credentials as an unabashed champion of pork-barrel spending. In a May 2006 letter to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Rep. Taylor?s chief of staff proudly compared his boss to Sens. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), two of the biggest porkers in Congress. In striving to emulate his porcine colleagues, Rep. Taylor has announced his intention to secure $590 million in federal funds for his own ?Road to Nowhere? and has earmarked taxpayer dollars for a nonprofit he helped to create, which gets 100 percent of its funding from government grants and whose directors have contributed to Rep. Taylor?s election campaigns. For pigging out at the government trough and displaying shameless pride for bringing home the bacon, CAGW names Rep. Charles Taylor the Porker of the Month for August 2006. Read more about the Porker of the Month.”
