Now The Media Seeks Out Marines’ Story About Haditha?

Since the story about Haditha broke the media has been all over the story charging that Marines massacred and then covered up the (as John Murtha said) “cold blooded murder” of Iraqi civilians. And the liberal left has left their drool all over this story.

So it is odd that only now has someone seriously attempted to get the other side of the story. In today’s Washington Post the story is “Marine Says Rules Were Followed”

Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich, 26, told his attorney that several civilians were killed Nov. 19 when his squad went after insurgents who were firing at them from inside a house. The Marine said there was no vengeful massacre, but he described a house-to-house hunt that went tragically awry in the middle of a chaotic battlefield.

“It will forever be his position that everything they did that day was following their rules of engagement and to protect the lives of Marines,” said Neal A. Puckett, who represents Wuterich in the ongoing investigations into the incident. “He’s really upset that people believe that he and his Marines are even capable of intentionally killing innocent civilians.”

Wuterich’s detailed version of what happened in the Haditha neighborhood is the first public account from a Marine who was on the ground when the shootings occurred. As the leader of 1st Squad, 3rd Platoon, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Wuterich was in the convoy of Humvees that was hit by a roadside bomb. He entered the house from which the Marines believed enemy fire was originating and made the initial radio reports to his company headquarters about what was going on, Puckett said.

This story is quite a bit different including charges that civilian deaths were immediately reported and that there was no attempt to cover it up.

A simple check of the documentation of the incident will prove or disprove such statements.

The truth of what happens in a war with guerilla terrorists is often not very pretty. They climb onto the rooftops of homes of people with no idea what is happening and launch attacks in the hope that they can facilitate civilian causalities. Their goal is to gain support from the very people they are deceiving. And the whole claim that innocent civilians were killed is in doubt especially when at least one child involved in the aftermath of the attack admitted to knowing there was a bomb and that it was going to go off. “WALID (through translator): I was planning to go to school. I was about to get out of bed. I knew the bomb would explode, so I covered my ears. The bomb exploded. The bomb struck an armored vehicle. I don?t know if it was a Humvee or an armored vehicle. When the bomb exploded, they came straight to our house.” (source: CNN)

No one that knows about an assault on our troops and does nothing is innocent. The “doing nothing” tells me that they wanted the attack to happen and were all too willing to let it.

Some might say they were too scared of the insurgents. Yet such is not mentioned in interviews. And there comes a time when you have to be willing to fight against the enemy. Again, if you are not then you are siding with them and suffer the consequences.

Haditha is still far from a settled issue but the fact that the media would run with the story so long and hard without getting all the information they could is telling. The media’s original assertions may turn out to be true. However knowing the enemy that we are facing and that their tactics have always included lies and deceit you have to be careful to trust what they say. Oh yeah, and you have to be careful of the media too ?
