Keep It Up! We Are Being Heard!

Americans concerned about the lagging effort to secure our borders may be getting some good news soon.
May 12, 2006 ? The White House is considering calling up more than 5,000 National Guard troops to help secure the border between the United States and Mexico. The troops would not be involved directly in law enforcement, which is prohibited by law. Instead the National Guard would play a supporting role, manning surveillance cameras in border towns, taking over office duties to free up law enforcement officers for border patrol and operating unmanned surveillance aircraft drones.
Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., one of the staunchest opponents of the president’s immigration plan, said he is in favor of using the Guard.
“We train National Guard all over the country, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be conducting that training on our borders,” Tancredo said. “Really, we are not trying to take them from other places where they are needed.” - ABC News
We’ve been complaining pretty loudly for quite a while but it seems that the effort is paying off. However we need to be careful. We need to make sure that what is being “considered” actually gets done and that when it gets done it simply isn’t window dressing. We need to make sure that when resources are moved to help secure our borders they are actually doing what needs to be done and not maintaining the status quo.
We also have to make sure that the White House doesn’t try to use this as a bargaining chip where President Bush comes out and says “Ok I met you half way and gave you the National Guard on the border. Now you meet me half way and let me push through an amnesty plan.” Amnesty is still unacceptable so don’t let them try it!
