House Votes To Keep American Dependent on Foreign Oil/Gas
J.J. Jackson* | May 19, 2006
You can tell how serious the government really is about helping America become less dependent on third world dictators and tyrants that supply us with much of our oil and natural gas by their actions.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite talk of an energy crisis and the need for independence from foreign oil, Congress seems to be in no mood to open more of the country’s coastal waters to energy development. The House late Thursday rejected an attempt to end the quarter-century ban on oil and natural gas drilling that has been in effect for 85 percent of the country’s coastal waters from Alaska to New England despite arguments that new supplies are needed to lower energy costs.
Lawmakers from Florida and California, who led the fight to continue the drilling moratorium, said they feared energy projects as close as three miles from shore could jeopardize multibillion-dollar tourism industries in their states. - Associated Press
A major reason why?
“People don’t go to visit the coasts of Florida or the coast of California to watch oil wells,” Rep. Sam Farr, D-Calif., said.
Ok, this is the typical specious argument we hear from the socialists and the wanna-be socialists more interested in keeping the land off limits to the people than actually doing something good for the people.. With vertical drilling rigs do not need to be close to shore where people will see them. But any excuse to continue keeping America under of their fellow travelers is a good excuse for them.
Then there were these idiotic comments by Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif.
“Drilling three miles off our coast will not lower gas prices today or anytime in the near future.”
Hey Lois, this has been the SAME excuse you guys and gals have been using for the past 30 some odd years! Image, if you will, if all those years ago you had let the drilling happen where we would be today? Why we’d have rigs producing today and a larger supply of domestic oil and natural gas!
Of course it takes years to develop oil and gas fields! We know that! But to keep using the excuse that it won’t help in the “near future” to prevent drilling shows that you don’t really want us to ever drill and become independent of foreign oil. We KNOW it takes time. That is why it is important to start NOW you damn moonbat!
