Hagel-Martinez Bill A Politician’s Wet Dream

We have several problems with our government. Aside from the obvious problem of inept and pandering politicians, the next two are arguably that we have more laws than we need and that many of those are far too complex leading only to confusion and purposeful misdirection as people try to wade through their vast pages. Take the Hagel-Martinez immigration reform bill now in the Senate which weighs in at a hefty 614 pages (source: Washington Times).

Do we really need a bill that is 614 pages to deal with illegal immigration? I dare say I can write a 2 or 3 page bill to cover it pretty well. So what purpose can such a vast tome serve except to confuse and mislead? The answer is none. The purpose of making the proposal so voluminous is specifically to hide what they don’t want people to see.

The bill proposes some things that I don’t necessarily have a problem with such as

All told, the Hagel-Martinez bill would increase the annual flow of legal immigrants into the U.S. to more than 2 million from roughly 1 million today, scholars and analysts say.

however many other things that I do such as

dramatically lower(ing) the skill level [required] of those immigrants. (note: BOLD text added by me)

Also it would still grant amnesty to criminals

These proposed increases are in addition to the estimated 10 million to 12 million illegal aliens already in the U.S. whom the bill would put on a path to citizenship.

In fact this bill seems strictly designed to bring the worst and the dimmest (instead of the best and the brightest) to America shifting visas from being reserved skilled workers to unskilled workers (135,000 and 150,000 respectively). What does that mean boys and girls? Yep more low wage earning mouths for the government to pander to and take care of.

Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation agrees

“College-educated immigrants are likely to be strong contributors to the government’s finances, with their taxes exceeding the government’s costs,” wrote Mr. Rector, who will release his findings today at a press conference with Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican.

“By contrast, immigrants with low education levels are likely to be a fiscal drain on other taxpayers,” he added. “This is important because half of all adult illegal immigrants in the U.S. have less than a high-school education. In addition, recent immigrants have high levels of out-of-wedlock childbearing, which increases welfare costs and poverty.”

But then again since when do politicians care what’s good for America when what’s best for THEM is what gets them re-elected? And at the rate things are going it looks like we’ve got two more self serving ?moderate?, liberal wanna-be Republicans in the form of Chuck Hagel and Mel Martinez cut right out of the mold of John McCain.
