Agree And Disagree With Krauthammer
J.J. Jackson* | May 19, 2006
The following is the final two paragraphs of Charles Krauthammer’s piece in Townhall.com.
I am not against legalization.
I am. It is a de facto amnesty from the existing law which they have violated.
Admittedly, legalization is desperately unfair to the further millions who have been waiting in line at U.S. consulates around the world.
AGREE!
And by itself, it would only encourage future illegals.
FULLY AGREE!
But if coupled with a program that closes down the border, it would make sense. It would resolve the problem once and for all.
Disagree Charles and here is why. Right now, closing down the border would help but if we grant amnesty and tomorrow the illegals continue to find their way into this country somehow then it simply would continue to perpetuate the problem and lead to calls for another amnesty in another 20 or so years. Closing down the border AND refusing to give amnesty to criminal aliens here in the states would resolve the problem more fully.
Serious border enforcement is what’s missing in the president’s “comprehensive” program.
AGREE!
And that is why so many “conservatives” are extremely unhappy.
DITTO!
Not out of nativism.
Yup.
There are many like me who cannot wait to end the shadow life of the illegals.
You’ll never end the shadowed lives of illegals. If you are illegal you must live such a life and there will always be illegal aliens in the United States.
But doing so while fraudulently promising to close the border is a simple capitulation — and an invitation to the next president to declare the next amnesty for the next torrent of illegals who will have understood from the Bush program that crossing the border at night and finding a place to hide is the surest road to the American dream.
BINGO!
The answer to illegal immigration is simple - enforce the laws already on the books.
