Myers Speaks On Attempted Military Coup
J.J. Jackson* | April 17, 2006
There has been a lot of hoopla about Generals that are speaking out against Rumnsfeld. Their whines are that Rumsfeld didn’t listen to them but the reality is he did listen to them, their opinions and the opinions of their like thinking fellows - he just didn’t do things their way. Big difference. But that’s not the way it’s being portrayed.
General Myers has given his insight:
“It’s inappropriate because it’s not the military that judges our civilian bosses. We’d be in a horrible state in this country, in my opinion, if the military was left to judge the civilian bosses, because when you judge Secretary Rumsfeld, you’re also judging the commander in chief, because that’s the chain of command, and that’s just not appropriate,” Gen. Myers told ABC’s “This Week” program.
Saying
“I think there are professional standards that you have when you are in uniform that carry on when you retire”
The Washington Times also reports:
The generals — four from the Army and two from the Marine Corps — now say the defense secretary intimidated senior officers and “meddled” in war plans that, they say, resulted in “poor war planning” after Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein was deposed. The retired generals said Mr. Rumsfeld lacked ground troops and failed to foresee the insurgency in Iraq by al Qaeda terrorists.
Excuse me? I thought the Constitution specifically granted civilian control of the military? You know, to that guy called the President who is elected by the civilians?
In essence the point of all this whining comes down to this - “How dare the civilians control the military!” And “How dare we not the be ones in charge!” The attempted coup is not getting off the ground fortunately.
