Let’s Get In On Over Immigration!
J.J. Jackson* | April 2, 2006
I know that this blog is starting to become heavily dominated by this topic. And it’s for good reason. We have scores of politicians out there making any claim they think they can get away with to justify basically NOT enforcing the laws of the United States. I’m also getting some email here from people too scared to actually post comments. Again for good reason! That reason being their arguments are pretty much as weak as a wet papertowel!
Listen folks, the Senate plan IS amnesty. You can twist the English language every which way but it IS.
Making the claim that it is not and not supporting kicking out illegals already here but making them pay a fine and put them on a path to citizenship is amnesty.
It’s that’s obviously wrong. But that doesn’t stop people from trying. I keep getting emails containing some very bizarre (and wholly made up) definitions of the word amnesty. Like these:
“Amnesty is when we tell people that what they did was not wrong.”
“Only if we held them completely unaccountable would this be amnesty.”
And my personal favorites:
“Amnesty would only be accurate to describe what we are currently doing - which is nothing.”
“This plan isn’t amnesty but rather a pardon.” (see actual definition below for how STUPID this one is)
So let’s refresh everyone’s mind here ok?
Main Entry: am?nes?ty
Pronunciation: ‘am-n&-stE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -ties
: the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals
Ok got that? That is the exact definition of amnesty. In other words if you do not punish someone that broke the law in the way that the law prescribes you are granting them amnesty. The law right now says they are illegal and to be deported. Changing the law doesn’t change that fact. What it does do however is grant a pardon (a release from the legal penalties of an offense) to a large group of individuals - hmmmm sounds like AMNESTY!
