“Hey, I’m Just In This For The College Tuition!”
J.J. Jackson* | March 9, 2006
War? Fight for the country? What? No, no, no I’m only here for the paycheck or the college tuition. You find out who these people are in our armed services when the shooting starts. And “At least 8,000 members of the all-volunteer U.S. military” have made it clear that that is why they were REALLY in the military by deserting their posts since the Iraq War began.
Fodder for the left? No not really considering the “Desertions in 2005 represent 0.24% of the 1.4 million U.S. forces.”
Oh.
And even worse is that desertions have actually dropped since the nation went to war shortly after 9/11.
Desertion numbers have dropped since 9/11. The Army, Navy and Air Force reported 7,978 desertions in 2001, compared with 3,456 in 2005. The Marines showed 1,603 deserters in 2001. That declined by 148 in 2005.
While the terror attacks were a tragedy that killed thousands of American citizens it has at least helped to get some of the losers who never wanted to actually fight for this country but joined the military to get “free” stuff out of the ranks. And it has apparently whipped up more patriotism among our troops by higher retention rates and lower cowards running home to mommy.
Right now the left is out there looking for these couple thousand deserters to try and show how unpopular the war is among our troops and they’ll never tell you that it is only a small minority.
