Brokeback Mountain Snubbed … Ang Lee Confused
J.J. Jackson* | March 6, 2006
Surprisingly Brokeback Mountain DID NOT win the Oscar for Best Picture. “It was a surprise to me. In the box office we did the best of all five movies, it just happened this way.” (Source The Scottsman). Wait, so NOW box office results matter in “Best Picture”? Well, wouldn’t that have been nice to know when we were acutally nominating movies for the award!
After all there were so many movies that did better at the box office than Brokeback Mountain. Movies like Narnia which didn’t even get the nod despite crushing the gay cowboys at the box office. Released on the SAME day as of today Narnia has grossed $668,550,047 worldwide compared to Brokeback’s paltry $129,906,000 in comparison and had to rely on claims that its per screen take was so high. But never mentioned that its release locations was cherry picked to achieve that goal.
I’m sure Ang Lee is surprised. Most Americans were as well. They were surprised that Hollywood did an about face on a movie that prior to last night was the King (or is that Queen?) of the year. Next year however maybe we should take Ang Lee’s philosophy to heart and actually have nominations for best picture that deserve it based on how many people saw the film and actually liked it.
