Alliance Defense Fund Steps Up … ACLU Not Found

The ADF is taking on the Georgia Institute of Technology for what it calls a “draconian” speech code.

Through the program, called ?Safe Space,? university officials promote the beliefs of religions that favor homosexual behavior and denigrate religions that oppose homosexual behavior (www.safespace.gatech.edu/manual9.html).

?We find it intriguing that the ACLU hasn?t shown up this time, considering their stated concern over the so-called ?separation of church and state,?? said French. ?The university is clearly overstepping its bounds in interpreting religious texts and then pushing its own view upon a religiously diverse community on campus. This is indeed an unconstitutional establishment of religion that clearly violates students? First Amendment rights to free speech and religious liberty.? - Alliance Defense Fund

The “mission” of this “Safe Space” program is stated as such

“The main objectives of these programs are: (a) to provide a supportive environment for GLBT members of the campus community, (b) to facilitate their “coming out” process, (c) to foster a social climate in which others do not feel the need to express anti-gay attitudes in order to “fit in,” (d) to dispel negative stereotypes and present factually accurate information about GLBT people, and (e) to publicize other support resources or structures that are available on or off campus.”

Why? Well because according to the program

Studies have shown that, in some cases, anti-gay attitudes arise from a psychological need to manifest values or opinions shared by a person’s immediate social environment in order to gain acceptance and friendship. Conversely, empirical research has also shown that prejudice diminishes under conditions of equal status, common goals, shared values, cooperation, and ongoing, moderate intimacy. Thus, safe space programs foster an environment that is beneficial to the campus community as a whole.

Oh, I see. So in “some cases” the anti-gay attitudes are just because people want to go along with the bigots right?

Listen, I don’t know if this amounts to a first amendment case or not. The manual is not much more than your typical liberal psychobabble about issues that few people really put much thought into. You know the typical how to deal with someone that tells you they’re gay, etc. The reaction of most people is simply that’s nice and I don’t care. But the libs have to make it into something more apparently.

I’ll believe that they are really interested in creating “safe” spaces on campus when they stop sending out the little brown shirts to tear down right leaning posters, etc.
