Congressional Thugs Dictate How Alaska Must Use Their Land

I have never been a fan of allowing any and every pet project to be attached to unrelated appropriations bills in backdoor attempts to get them passed. And the attachment of a provision to allow oil drilling in Alaska’s vast, federally controlled, wild refuge known as ANWR is no different. However it is a valid tactic to get objectives passed and has been used by members of all parties. That still doesn’t mean that I personally think it is right.

Well, the left wing top down managers of this country in the Senate got their way last night and forced the removal of a provision that would allow Alaska to drill for oil in ANWAR. But what did they allow to go through I wonder?

After all with all the talk about how “dependence” on foreign oil is a problem and even a national threat considering how much of it comes from the middle east you can at least make a half hearted attempt to justify it a valid part of a “defense” bill.

Instead here is what DID get attached and approved:

“$29 billion for hurricane relief, the war and border security, and $2 billion to help low-income households pay this winter?s heating expenses” - source

note that TWO of those are NOT even related to national defense and dare I say blatantly unconstitutional.

Those two items I refer to are money for “hurricane relief” and “winter heating expense” subsidies. Go ahead, try and justify either under Article I, Section 8. It would be amusing to hear someone try!

So in the end the Senate voted to tell Alaska and Alaskans no on how to use their own land and yes to unconstitutional spending. And people wonder why this country is quickly becoming a dysfunctional socialist democracy.

I say that the residents of Alaska tell the Congress where to shove it and open up ANWR themselves. It would be amusing to watch the government try to justify using force to stop them and dare I say a futile venture.
