1,000th Execution to Be Performed This Friday!
J.J. Jackson* | December 2, 2005 |
Estes Thompson, of the Associated Press writes about Kenneth Lee Boyd. Apparently, Mr. Boyd is set to die at 2:00 a.m. this Friday.
The article, titled Landmark Execution Set for Early Friday states in part:
“He would love to live and he would love to have the governor and the courts step in, but he’s also facing the possibility that won’t happen,” said Boyd’s lawyer, Thomas Maher.
Well, Mr. Maher, I would love to live, too. I would also really appreciate it if no one kills me and thus lets me live as long as God wills it. I would venture to say that Mr. Boyd’s ex-wife would have loved to live, too!
Boyd, 57, did not deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry. Family members said Boyd stalked his estranged wife after they separated following 13 stormy years of marriage and once sent a son to her house with a bullet and a threatening note.
During the slayings, Boyd’s son Christopher was pinned under his mother’s body as Boyd unloaded a .357-Magnum into her. The boy pushed his way under a bed to escape the barrage. Another son grabbed the pistol while Boyd tried to reload.
What kind of person does this and then expects to not face the consequences of his or her actions? Many of you who have read my posts know where I stand on the death penalty and how I feel about it. Nonetheless, I can see the rationale behind it. I know I could never sentence a person do die if I were a juror. Maybe I’m a bit too Catholic, as some people have told me. Hopefully, I’m guilty as charged.
Here is what I see in an article like this, and it is not meant as an insult to Mr. Thompson.
What we have here is people talking about the 1,000th person being executed since 1977. Yes, I do find it to be terrible that another person is losing his life prior to its natural end. I really do.
But, why are we as a society more concerned with the death of a man who so viciously killed his wife, with his son even present in the room? At the same time, how can we as a society not be all that concerned about the execution of over 46,000,000 innocent American children?
With Tookie Williams and others set to die soon, there are many people coming out of the woodworks (even the likes of sweet innocent Snoop Dogg) trying to speak out against the death penalty. Yet, none seem to want to talk about the actions took by those who are on death row. They want to say people like Tookie are “reformed now.”
If people like Tookie Williams and Mr. Boyd did not commit these acts of violence in the first place, they would not have to reform later.
I am all for forgiving these people, had they committed these atrocities to my family or me. I know that by executing them, those who died will not be brought back to life.
These people do have to face the consequences of their actions. If that means the death penalty, I guess that is their fate. I do not have to agree with it, but that is how it is, for now.
I find it completely hypocritical is that these same people who cry out when someone gets put into the gas chamber say nothing when millions of children who will be put to death this year so women can have free choice! Well, your precious Kenneth Boyd and Tookie Williams made a free choice to murder their victims.
There is one last thing I found interesting about this particular article. In recent articles regarding Tookie Williams, we have heard about the death penalty being racist. Is it going to be okay, then, that Kenneth Lee Boyd is white? Where is the outcry that more whites have been executed than blacks?
