A man was shot and killed by police officers in Stockton, CA solely because he could not speak English. Well that is the impression I got from this article.
The man shot and killed by police near Cesar Chavez High School on Saturday would still be alive if he was able to communicate with officers or police had sent someone who could speak Spanish, said relatives of Gustavo Pe?a Izaguirre on Wednesday.
Maybe good ol’ Gustavo should not have been acting in a manner that would lead police officers to believe they needed to use deadly force! I don’t know about you, but if a police officer is showing me the business end of his pistol, I am going to put my hands in the air and slowly make my way down to the ground! Guns do not have a language because they do not need one! Guns mean business.
Of course, the reason why police officers had to resort to deadly force has nothing to do with the quote below:
Police say Pe?a refused verbal commands and fought with a Stockton Unified officer, causing minor injury to the officer. When Stockton police officers arrived, he again disobeyed orders and was not deterred by the use of pepper spray or a Taser. Pe?a was armed with a 4-foot sharpened stick, prompting officers to consider him a threat.

Whether Mr. Pe?a could understand English or not, he darn sure knew that those men with badges and guns were police officers. He also knew he was assualting them and putting them in danger with a 4-foot sharpened stick. Understanding English or not, he understood violence and the police officers recognized their life was in danger.
According to Pe?a’s family, the police should not have defended themselves.
“If they kill everyone who has a stick in their hand, we all have something to fear,” Corrales said. “They could have shot him in the arm or leg, but they didn’t have to go for the stomach.”
If people don’t have a stick in their hand against the Police in the first place, they won’t have to worry about being shot!
Of course, the fact that Pe?a was a criminal had nothing to do with his actions. It’s only because he couldn’t speak the language of the country in which he chose to live!
Yanet Rodriguez, 22, who was living with Pe?a, described him as a noble person with high aspirations. But she said he also served time in jail for drug charges and was afraid of being arrested again. And he was, she said, “abusing marijuana.”
Well, I guess if I’m ever afraid of getting arrested, I can assault police officers too. Oh wait, I can speak English so I don’t have a defense.
