Now Comes The REAL Test Against NCAA “Indian Name” Ban

Following Florida State forcing the NCAA to remove their mascot from a list of “Banned” mascots that prohibits schools from hosting post season tournaments if they refused to change their mascots, the University of North Dakota has stepped in and decided to formally appeal as well. Central Michigan (the Chippewas) will also be appealing.

However in a twist according the Washington Times, the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe moved to withdraw support of North Dakota’s mascot citing it as “both dishonorable and an affront to the dignity and well being of the members of Spirit Lake.” According to the times other tribes have expressed similar … uh … reservations?

So it appears that the first REAL test of the NCAA’s authoritarian power is about to begin. With Florida State the NCAA stepped in a hornets nest that had they done their homework could have been avoided. But now we have the Sioux who are somehow trying to convince people that using a proud Indian warrior as a symbol is “dishonorable”.

I am sure the NCAA will latch on to that as their defense of an asinine ruling that has basically laid the ground work to ban any team from hosting post season play if someone finds their mascot “offensive”. Maybe its time the NCAA goes by the wayside.
