Gee, You Mean Cindy Sheehan DOESN’T Speak For Everyone?
J.J. Jackson* | August 18, 2005 |
You wouldn’t know that Cindy Sheehan wasn’t the spokesman for mothers who had their children die fighting in the War on Terror. Well, not if you browse the headlines anyway.
For example, right now if on Google you flip to news and search “Cindy Sheehan” you get 7,070 stories. Granted, some are pro, some are con and some are neutral. But there are still 7,070 stories.
Now do a search in the news for “Debbie Argel Bastian”. You get a WHOPPING 5 results!
Woo is Debbie Argel Bastian you ask? Well Debbie is a mother that is upset that anti-war protestors are using her son’s name to support their cause saying “I’m livid about it”.
She further stated “Derek would not want to be remembered that way.”
But is she getting covered? Nope. Why? Because she doesn’t fit the media template of finding anything that portrays the war in a bad light. And what about Veterans for Peace who are using her son’s name? Well this is their solution “the group will not remove Argel’s cross, it may, out of deference to Bastian, move it out of the front row, said Lane Anderson, a Veterans for Peace member.”
Aw, how sweet. They are still going to use his name, against the mother’s wishes, but just wont make it as prominent. That’s right. It’s that same old “we know better what’s good for you than you do” attitude so often expressed by the left. It is the same attitude Cindy Sheehan is still giving her son Casey who volunteered to go to war. By using his memory to support her anti-war stance she is telling him “Don’t worry Casey - I know what’s best for you.”
And in another story it is reported that Veterans for Peace may concede but is arrogant enough to demand Debbie come and visit the memorial. “While Veterans for Peace will not remove Argel’s cross, it has decided to give Bastian the tag on the cross with his name on it, but only if she decides to visit the memorial, said Lane Anderson, a Veteran’s for Peace volunteer.”
Not only is it selfish, but it is disrespectful. But then those like Cindy Sheehan and Veterans for Peace have no shame.
