Its the PROOF President Bush Is EVIL!

Left wing Marxists are furious. They are furious because the mainstream media is paying little attention to the “Downing Street Memo” which, in their minds, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that not only is President Bush a warmonger, but the war with Iraq really was all about oil.

The memo, dated July 23, 2002 is labeled “extremely sensitive”.

The problem is that there is not a whole lot of facts in the memo but rather made up entirely of feelings and perceptions. It doesn’t even contain any second hand record of quotes where Bush Administration officials said “Yup, we want that oil and dang it we’re going to war with Saddam!”

Highlights the left is salivating over include:

C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime’s record. There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.

Uh oh … someone’s opinion. Well, that’s good enough for the left! I guess they ignored all the times that George Bush publicly cited failure to comply with the cease fire and human rights abuses too. No, a British official said that it was only terrorism and WMD … RUN WITH IT!

The Defence Secretary said that the US had already begun “spikes of activity” to put pressure on the regime. No decisions had been taken, but he thought the most likely timing in US minds for military action to begin was January, with the timeline beginning 30 days before the US Congressional elections.

Uh oh … President Bush was putting “pressure” on Saddam. THAT PROVES IT! He’s a warmonger! Uh … no … not really. The “pressure” being applied was to try and get Saddam to agree to the terms of the cease fire which he had broken. Gee, Heaven forbid that we would want him to comply right?

The Attorney-General said that the desire for regime change was not a legal base for military action. There were three possible legal bases: self-defence, humanitarian intervention, or UNSC authorisation. The first and second could not be the base in this case. Relying on UNSCR 1205 of three years ago would be difficult. The situation might of course change.

Uh oh, Mr. Rycroft is now a fabulous mind reader. He sets up three scenarios and claims with a wave of a limp wristed hand that none of them were possible so that seals it! Bush was planning war NO MATTER WHAT! Are we going to get to anything concrete here any time soon you nutty lefties? Or are we going to keep working on that “Bush is an evil warmonger who only wants oil premise”?

On the first, CDS said that we did not know yet if the US battleplan was workable. The military were continuing to ask lots of questions.

Uh oh … the United States had a “battle plan”. Well, that makes it beyond a reasonable doubt now! Actually … no it doesn’t. We have lots of “battle plans”. It doesn’t mean that President Bush is going to use them. It’s called being prepared. Heaven forbid we are prepared right?

Gee, after looking at it there really isn’t much there at all. Not unless you really spin it and operate on the assumption that just because someone said the U.S. was going to go to war no matter what means that it is so.

No, what this memo really shows is that the United States recognized that Saddam was probably not going to give in and that if he didn’t we might … just might … really just might … have to use force. And that is what the left is really ticked off about. It is the fact that President Bush is smart enough to know that sometimes war is indeed the answer when the enemy shows that they can no longer be dealt with in a civilized manner.

And that just eats at them. Because once they realize that the people understand that war is sometimes the answer, they can no longer stand around with their tie-dyed t-shirts and “War is not the answer” signs and wait for the day that everyone is asleep at the switch so they can take over and kill those that oppose them.

Their world view just crumbles. Boo hoo.
