Downing Street Memo Not Adding Up?
J.J. Jackson* | June 21, 2005
New questions are arising regarding The Downing Street Memo which was touted by hate America/George Bush types as the silver bullet that would undo the Bush Presidency. Aside from the fact that it doesn?t say anything about how President Bush lied and does not contain a single quote now questions are being shed on the ?authenticity? of this memo itself. Dan Rather, call you office!
If you want to read my previous dissection of the over glorified memo you can do so here. That is not my topic for today. My topic is rather that British reporter Michael Smith who was given the ?memos? that ?he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.? (source).
What? *sniff sniff* Something here smells funny. Especially when you have John Kerry making statements like:
“When I go back [to Washington] on Monday, I am going to raise the issue. I think it’s a stunning, unbelievably simple and understandable statement of the truth and a profoundly important document that raises stunning issues here at home. And it’s amazing to me the way it escaped major media discussion. It’s not being missed on the Internet, I can tell you that.”
So we have a series of memos but the memos are not really the memos but rather what Michael Smith claims to be some memos that we can?t confirm are indeed the memos because Michael Smith destroyed the original memos.
This is rich. No serious journalist destroys his source material when the source material is integral to determining the authenticity of his claims. Then there is the claim that he ?typed copies on plain paper?. Odd. Reuters has a picture of what it claims is one of the memos and it doesn?t look to be on ?plain paper? to me. I don?t know, but ?plain paper? to me doesn?t mean including an official looking seal. (source)
So here we go again. It is possibly Memogate all over! We cannot verify the information formally and are just supposed to accept it. It is true that no one has really stepped forward and said the information was fake either. But then again, the information doesn?t show any real attempt by the Bush Administration to ?fix? the evidence but merely someone?s interpretation of what was going on.
So here we wait and watch and listen to see what happens next. At least if the memos were faked they did a better job this time around.
