The Minuteman Effect
J.J. Jackson | May 24, 2005
If you thought the legacy of the Minuteman Project was only pomp and circumstance, think again. Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado and a caucus of 71 members sent investigators out into the field during the Minuteman Vigil to interview volunteers, border agents and others. Did you know that? Probably not if you listen to or read any main stream media outlets.
The report refutes the ?official? Border Patrol claims that the Minuteman caused problems, and interfered with enforcement efforts around Naco, Arizona. It says ?nearly every individual Border Patrol officer who spoke off-the-record in the field said that illegal immigration virtually stopped in the sector patrolled by the Minutemen as a direct result of Minutemen?. It also said ?individual officers were highly appreciative of the impact the Minutemen made?.
Uh oh. Time for the bureaucratic spin machine to get into high gear on this one! Especially when the report also made the following statements and conclusions:
?[The tide of illegal crossings] is catastrophic. It does not ebb and flow — it only grows.?
?The insanity of [current immigration policy], or silent toleration of such a policy is almost criminal in itself.?
?[Failure of Border policy was] through no fault of [U.S. Border Patrol] rank-and-file enforcement officers.?
?[The Minutemen] put to rest the historic immigration reform myth that it is impossible to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border with any reasonable amount of additional manpower.?
From this report, the proposal is being made that there exists currently enough man power to do officially what the Minuteman did unofficially and that it should be done. This man power includes National Guard units and State Militias and the report calls for the leaders of border States to file requests for federal funding to mobilize these troops to help support the U.S. Border Patrol.
The plan will no doubt lead to a confrontation between those concerned with the security of our nation?s borders and so-called ?immigrant? rights (read as supporters of illegal aliens) and federal bureaucrats that couldn?t see a problem even if it donned a hot pink tank top, held a flashing neon sign in front of them that said ?PROBLEM HERE!? and called through a bull horn ?Hey! Yo! PROBLEM OVER HERE!?.
If the situation is not handled soon however, the tensions and frustrations at the border will escalate to the point where real vigilante action will be taken by those fed up with finding criminals sleeping in their chicken coups and breaking into their homes trying to find food. Of course, at that point the bureaucrats will blame the Americans that take matters into their own hands to protect their private property rights rather than the criminals that are really the cause.
